And Heather, you really need to use Google a little more.
I had a friend from Latvia and he basically said nothing is pronounced like it looks, so it's quite likely lats are pronounced blats. What book did you buy?

And here I thought it was only us American's who didn't learn geography. The last lesson in geography that I remember was in about 5th grade when we had to learn the capital cities for all the states.....it's really sad.

It is not just limited to Britain. There are a lot of countries that could do a lot to improve their educational systems.

You are so right! Ox Bow lakes is about all I remember from geography lessons! That and stalactites and stalagmites but I never know which hang down and which grow up. I must read some geography text books before my daughter needs help with her homework.

I think that ultimately the British education system has a lot to answer for. We're brought up to be so insular and there is still this arrogant expectation that everyone else should and does speak English!

AND I can speak languages.

How true - travelling alone is incredibly empowering in ways you just can't recreate round Tescos on a Saturday morning with three kids. I know exactly the feeling you are describing here - the one where your head rises and you just can't stop it - why would you stop it?! :)

Oh my god. Can't imagine at all. My little one has what seems like similar nappy rash that has been blamed on an allergy to night time pull-ups. Lots of laundry days are now in my future.

Totally with you. You shouldn't always answer the bloody thing. Whenever we're having dinner we never answer the phone. My mother in law always gives it like, mmm, 2 minutes then calls again. Then when we call her back she insists on having a back and forth 'Oh I wasn't sure whether you were out. I left a message just in case.' exchange. Or my Mum calls on the landline and then instantly the mobile when we don't answer. If I don't answer I don't want to talk. Simple.

Oh, I feel better now for getting that out. Thanks for that.
